AFTER SYRIA

BY THE SEA

Leaving the Forest: After Syria by the Sea...

This installation is based on the Romantic painting Syria by the Sea by Frederic Edwin Church (1873).

We are all aware of what is happening in Syria at the moment. Like with my other pieces, Leaving the Forest: After Syria by the Sea is a reflection on the looming shadow of the well intentioned United States over the rest of the world. We are still deciding whether to go into Syria or stay out; it is a potentially destructive and complex decision. The doe is looking at its shadow, gagged or muzzled; it depends how the viewer sees the mask on the deer. I see a ball gag, some see a muzzle. Either way, it cannot talk. Interestingly, one accessory is victimizing (muzzle) the other is masochistic (ball-gag.)
